When Can My Child Start Reception?
Starting school is an exciting milestone for children and families. One of the most common questions parents ask is:
“When can my child start Reception?”
In South Australia, Reception intake dates are based on your child’s date of birth. Depending on when your child turns five, they may start school at the beginning of the year or through a mid-year intake.

Reception Intake Dates at a Glance
If your child turns 5 between:
1 May and 31 October
Your child can generally start Reception at the beginning of Term 3 in the year they turn five.
1 November and 30 April
Your child can generally start Reception at the beginning of the school year in the year they turn five.
All children are entitled to four terms of Reception.
